Ethiopia’s Opposition wins election court battle in the South

After filing election related complaints in several districts, the Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice (EZEMA) won a court battle to force rerun of election in four southern districts.

Ezema claimed of polling station and other election irregularities. The case was heard in a Federal court for election affairs.

Despite being the largest opposition party, Ezema won only four seats in the Southern SNNP region for House of Peoples Representatives. The opposition also won 10 seats for SNNPR regional counsel.

While Ezema widely underperformed from high expectations, it had managed to win significant “popular votes” in various urban areas of Ethiopia, including in Addis Ababa, where it lost to the ruling party.

The ruling Prosperity Party (PP) lost the “popular vote” in most districts of Addis Ababa, but managed to win nearly all parliament seats due to opposition parties’ votes being split up among each other.
